Unclog a toilet

Safety first

Do not flush again while the bowl is high. Never use chemical drain cleaner in a toilet.

Written steps

  1. Stop using the toilet and wait for the water level to settle.
  2. Place a flange-style toilet plunger over the drain opening so it forms a seal.
  3. Push and pull steadily several times without splashing.
  4. If the water drains, test with one normal flush while watching the bowl.

  • The water is rising, sewage appears in another fixture, or more than one drain is blocked.
  • An object may have been flushed.
  • The toilet leaks at the floor or rocks.
