Reset a tripped breaker

Reset one clearly tripped breaker once when the panel is resident-accessible and dry.

Safety first

Never remove the panel cover, touch wiring, or reset a hot, wet, buzzing, sparking, or damaged panel.

Written steps

  1. Turn off or unplug devices in the affected area and make sure your hands and the floor are dry.
  2. At the closed electrical panel, look for one switch sitting between ON and OFF.
  3. Move that switch fully to OFF, then once to ON.
  4. If it trips again, leave it OFF and submit a maintenance request.

Stop and request maintenance if

  • You see damage, moisture, rust, sparks, or scorch marks, or smell burning.
  • The panel is not readily accessible without moving stored items.
  • The breaker trips again or will not stay on.
