Reset a GFCI outlet

Restore power to an outlet after its built-in safety switch trips.

Safety first

Use only the TEST and RESET buttons. Never remove the outlet cover or touch wiring.

Written steps

  1. Unplug anything connected to the outlet and make sure your hands and the surrounding area are dry.
  2. Press the RESET button firmly until you feel or hear a click.
  3. Plug in one small device to confirm power has returned.
  4. If the outlet trips again, leave it off and submit a maintenance request.

Stop and request maintenance if

  • You smell burning, see discoloration, hear buzzing, or the outlet feels hot.
  • Water has entered the outlet or wall.
  • The RESET button will not stay engaged.
