If you smell gas

Leave the area and follow emergency directions immediately if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak.

About Act immediatelyMaintenance guidance

Safety first

Do not search for the source, operate switches, use a phone inside, light a flame, or attempt any repair.

What to do now

  1. Leave the home and move everyone to a safe location away from the building.
  2. From outside and away from the suspected leak, call 911 if there is immediate danger.
  3. Follow the emergency contact instructions in your lease materials and contact your gas utility from a safe location.
  4. Do not re-enter until emergency personnel or the utility says it is safe.

Stop and request maintenance if

  • Always stop DIY activity when gas odor or a gas alarm is present.
  • Anyone feels dizzy, nauseated, weak, or has a headache.
  • You hear hissing or see a damaged gas appliance or line.
